What Is DLT Registration for SMS in India?

The short answer

DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) registration is the system India’s telecom regulator, TRAI, requires businesses to use before sending commercial SMS. Every telecom operator runs a DLT platform where senders register. If your business, sender ID and message text are not registered, the message is blocked instead of delivered.

Why it exists

The rules come from TRAI’s regulations on commercial communications, introduced to reduce spam and fraud. Registration links each message to a verified business and to wording that was approved in advance.

What you need to register

• Your business (the “principal entity”), with supporting business and identity documents. Requirements vary by operator.
• Sender IDs (headers): the short name that shows as the sender, such as a brand name or code.
• Message templates: the fixed wording of each message, with variable fields for things like names, amounts or OTP codes. Each approved template gets a template ID.
• Customer consent, for promotional messages.

How the process works

1. Choose an operator’s DLT portal and register your business.
2. Register your sender IDs.
3. Register each message template and wait for approval.
4. Link your registration to your SMS provider so it can send using your IDs.
5. Send messages that match the approved templates.

Common reasons messages get blocked

• The text doesn’t match a registered template.
• The sender ID isn’t registered, or isn’t linked to your provider account.
• A link in the message isn’t registered (some operators require links to be registered too).
