How to Get the WhatsApp Business API in India

Before you start
The free WhatsApp Business app is for one team using a phone. The WhatsApp Business API connects WhatsApp to software, so many agents, chatbots and campaigns can use one number. To get it you need a Meta Business account, a business website or other proof of your business, and a phone number for the API.
The steps
- Create or use your Meta Business account.
- Verify your business with Meta, using your business documents and website.
- Choose how to access the API: directly through Meta’s Cloud API, or through a provider that handles the setup and gives you an inbox and tools.
- Register your phone number and get your display name approved.
- Write message templates and submit them for approval.
- Collect opt-in from customers before messaging them.
- Connect the API to your CRM, helpdesk or chatbot.
Message types and pricing
WhatsApp sorts business messages into categories such as marketing, utility and authentication, and replies within the customer service window are treated differently from messages you start. Meta charges for template messages by category and by country, and providers may charge platform fees on top. Rates change, so check Meta’s current rate card before you budget.
Common mistakes
- Messaging people who haven’t opted in.
- Templates that read like spam, which get rejected.
- Using a number that is still active on the regular WhatsApp app.

How long does approval take?
Business verification and template approval can take from a few hours to several days, depending on Meta’s review and how complete your documents are.
Can I use my existing WhatsApp number?
It usually has to be moved off the regular WhatsApp app first, although Meta has been adding ways to use the Business app and the API together. Your provider can tell you what applies to your number.
Is the API free?
Not in general. Messages are charged as described above, and providers may add platform fees.
